Frequently asked questions

Performing echocardiograms across varying pediatric ages demands adjusting imaging techniques to account for different heart sizes and patient cooperation levels. Specialized skills in pediatric cardiovascular sonography enable precise adaptation, ensuring diagnostic-quality images whether examining premature infants or adolescent patients.

Expertise in congenital heart disease and intra-operative pediatric imaging sets pediatric cardiovascular echo sonographers apart. They must adeptly manage complex cardiac anomalies in children, requiring deep knowledge of neonatal physiology and the ability to support life-saving cardiac procedures.

In Oregon, beyond the mandatory OBMI sonography licensure, holding pediatric echocardiography credentials (PE) significantly enhances employability. These credentials demonstrate specialized knowledge in pediatric cardiac imaging, which employers like Legacy Health highly value.

Portland has a growing demand for pediatric cardiac imaging experts due to expanding healthcare services for children. While competition exists, professionals with pediatric echocardiography experience and relevant certifications are in a strong position to secure roles in reputable institutions.

Sonographers at Legacy Health rotate between Emanuel and Randall locations based on operational needs. Flexibility in scheduling and willingness to work across multiple sites are essential, reflecting the dynamic environment of pediatric cardiac care.

Legacy Health fosters a collaborative atmosphere offering continuing education and advancement opportunities. Sonographers benefit from a culture emphasizing inclusion, mentorship, and access to cutting-edge pediatric cardiovascular imaging technologies.

Hourly wages range from approximately $52.63 to $75.26, reflecting experience, certifications, and specialized pediatric cardiac sonography skills. This competitive pay aligns with Portland’s healthcare market and the advanced expertise required.

Daily tasks involve conducting comprehensive echocardiograms, including transthoracic and transesophageal studies, supporting complex procedures like ECMO, and collaborating closely with pediatric cardiologists. Sonographers adapt imaging to each patient’s unique needs, contributing to critical diagnostic and treatment decisions.

Programs accredited by recognized sonography boards that emphasize pediatric cardiovascular imaging are highly regarded locally. Candidates completing such programs and obtaining registry eligibility improve their chances of employment in Oregon’s pediatric cardiac sonographer roles.

At Legacy Health, sonographers collaborate directly with cardiologists, surgeons, and care specialists, providing crucial imaging insights. This team-based approach ensures comprehensive care planning and successful surgical outcomes for pediatric patients.
