Frequently asked questions

A Lead Electrical Engineer 1 in nuclear settings must excel in multi-discipline coordination, electrical system design for nuclear power plants, and complex engineering change packages. This role demands deep knowledge of power distribution, protective relays, and compliance with nuclear safety standards, setting it apart from generic electrical engineering positions.

Progression typically involves moving from detailed design roles to leading engineering teams, gaining licensure like PE, and mastering nuclear-specific systems and regulations. Experience in managing projects, client coordination, and technical oversight within nuclear environments is key to advancing toward senior leadership or specialized technical expert roles.

Phoenix has seen steady demand for nuclear engineers due to regional energy initiatives and modernization projects. Employers value candidates with nuclear plant experience, security clearances, and multi-discipline interfacing skills. However, competition is moderate, so demonstrating project leadership and nuclear-specific credentials enhances hiring prospects.

Hybrid roles in Phoenix often require 3 days in-office, balancing collaboration and remote flexibility. Traffic congestion varies, so proximity to the office or flexible start times can improve daily commutes. Employers like Sargent & Lundy emphasize work-life balance with paid leave and wellness programs, benefiting professionals managing onsite and home schedules.

Sargent & Lundy offers award-winning benefits including comprehensive healthcare, tuition assistance, and a strong emphasis on employee well-being. Their nuclear group’s legacy in advanced reactor technology and clean energy projects provides exposure to cutting-edge initiatives, making it a compelling employer for engineering leaders seeking innovation and stability.

This position merges technical oversight with strategic client interaction, requiring engineers to validate project scopes, mentor teams, and identify new business opportunities. The role’s hybrid nature supports continuous communication and collaboration, ensuring client satisfaction while guiding complex nuclear engineering projects to successful completion.

The salary band spans approximately $116,620 to $179,890 annually, reflecting the seniority and nuclear specialization. Compensation includes base pay, discretionary bonuses, and comprehensive benefits, positioning this role competitively within Phoenix’s nuclear engineering market while rewarding leadership and technical expertise.

Proficiency in electrical system design, including low and medium voltage distribution, power studies, and protective relay settings, is critical. Familiarity with engineering design packages, vendor evaluation, and nuclear safety protocols enhances effectiveness in this role, along with strong communication skills for cross-disciplinary coordination.

Daily tasks revolve around leading design teams, reviewing engineering deliverables, tracking project progress, and troubleshooting electrical issues. The role demands coordination with multi-discipline groups, managing client communications, and ensuring compliance with nuclear standards, balancing hands-on technical work with leadership duties.
