Frequently asked questions

Piping stress engineers working on nuclear projects in Englewood must master ASME codes relevant to nuclear safety and handle complex thermal, vibration, and hydrodynamic stresses. Local nuclear industry presence demands familiarity with regulatory standards and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams for plant modernization and safety compliance.

At Sargent & Lundy, the Lead Piping Stress Engineer guides technical teams through complex nuclear piping evaluations, balancing engineering rigor with client coordination. This leadership role directly impacts project quality, schedule adherence, and compliance with nuclear codes, setting it apart through its specialized focus on nuclear plant safety and innovation.

Many professionals advance from a Piping Stress Engineer 1 role to senior engineering positions, project management roles, or specialized technical consultancy within nuclear engineering. Gaining expertise in ASME codes, finite element analysis, and leadership skills often opens doors to strategic roles in nuclear plant design and safety oversight.

Holding a Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued, especially with mechanical or civil engineering credentials. Familiarity with ASME B31.1 and B&PV Section III codes also boosts prospects. Additionally, certifications in finite element analysis or piping software tools are advantageous given the technical demands of nuclear projects in Colorado.

Englewood hosts a niche but specialized market for nuclear piping stress engineers, benefiting from the region's focus on energy and engineering firms. While demand remains steady, competition is moderate, with preference for candidates combining nuclear experience, PE licensure, and strong technical communication skills.

This role follows a hybrid schedule requiring three days per week onsite at Englewood, fostering collaboration on nuclear projects while offering flexibility. Candidates should be prepared for hands-on team leadership and client interaction in-office, balanced with remote work to manage design reviews and technical documentation.

The salary range of $116,620 to $179,890 reflects strong market competitiveness for senior nuclear piping stress engineers in Colorado. This compensation aligns with the specialized skills required, including ASME code expertise, leadership responsibilities, and nuclear safety knowledge, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Engineers must navigate stringent nuclear safety regulations, manage complex thermal and vibration stresses, and ensure compliance with multiple ASME codes. Integrating multidisciplinary inputs and resolving design conflicts under tight schedules require both technical expertise and strong leadership.

Experience with AutoPIPE and PipeStress software is appreciated, as these tools streamline stress calculations and design validation. Additionally, familiarity with ANSYS Workbench and Mechanical ADP can enhance analysis accuracy, particularly for finite element modeling in nuclear piping systems.

Being part of a recognized leader in nuclear design and licensing offers exposure to cutting-edge projects like SMRs and advanced reactors. This environment fosters skill development, industry networking, and opportunities to contribute to pioneering clean energy initiatives, accelerating career advancement.
