Relief cashiers at OHSU in Portland must handle varying shifts including overnights and weekends, requiring flexibility and stamina. This role demands quick adaptation to different peak hours while maintaining precise cash handling and customer interaction, crucial in a bustling healthcare campus environment.

Unlike standard retail positions, relief cashiers at OHSU engage with diverse customers, from patients to staff, across cafes and services on Marquam Hill. They combine cash handling with light food prep and event cleanup, blending cashier duties with food service tasks in a healthcare setting.

Candidates should sharpen their cash handling accuracy, customer service finesse, and food safety knowledge such as obtaining a food handler’s card. Comfort with POS systems, multitasking across food service and cashier roles, and physical endurance are key for the fast-paced Portland healthcare context.

Relief cashiers at OHSU often stand, bend, and lift items up to 50 pounds while working near hot equipment and amidst hospital ambient noises. Exposure to heat, grease, and cold environments is common, requiring physical readiness and adherence to safety protocols uncommon in many retail cashier roles.

Portland’s cashier job market is moderately competitive, with healthcare employers like OHSU valuing candidates with customer service and food handling skills. The demand for versatile cashiers able to work varied shifts, including overnight, adds a selective edge compared to general retail cashier opportunities.

Holding a ServSafe certificate or a valid food handler’s card is advantageous in Portland, aligning with OHSU’s food safety standards. Additionally, familiarity with regional customer service expectations and cash management protocols can set applicants apart in this specialized healthcare environment.

The requirement to handle cash accurately alongside light food prep and event cleanup is less common in typical retail cashier roles in Portland.

Relief cashier roles at OHSU typically offer hourly pay ranging from $15 to $18, reflecting Portland’s cost of living and the healthcare sector’s standards. This competitive wage often exceeds that of general retail cashier positions, compensating for varied shifts and additional food service duties.
