Frequently asked questions
Portland's healthcare sector shows steady demand for cardiovascular radiologic technologists, especially in specialized cardiac cath labs. Many local hospitals, including OHSU, seek skilled techs, making the competition moderate but favoring candidates with advanced certifications and hands-on cath lab experience.
In Oregon, a valid diagnostic radiologic technologist license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging is mandatory. Certifications like RCES or RCIS from ASRT, along with BLS, ACLS, and PALS, significantly boost employability in cardiac cath lab roles.
Typical duties include operating fluoroscopy and imaging equipment during cardiac catheterization, prepping patients under sterile conditions, scrubbing in with physicians, and managing equipment maintenance. The role demands precision in imaging adults and congenital cases while supporting complex cardiovascular interventions.
Advancement pathways often involve gaining specialized certifications like vascular interventional credentials, moving into supervisory roles, or cross-training in electrophysiology and hybrid OR settings. Technologists can also pursue education roles or transition into cardiovascular technologist management.
At OHSU, technologists engage with a multidisciplinary team in a high-acuity environment covering both adult and congenital procedures. The institution offers diverse case exposure, cross-training opportunities, and competitive benefits, fostering professional growth in advanced cardiac imaging.
OHSU offers notable advantages like sign-on and relocation bonuses, comprehensive health coverage, multiple retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, and generous paid time off. This robust benefits package supports work-life balance and career development more extensively than many regional competitors.
Hourly rates at OHSU for this role typically range from $50.55 to $69.41, depending on experience and qualifications. This competitive pay scale reflects the demanding technical skills required and the specialized nature of cardiac cath lab procedures in the Portland healthcare market.
Cardiac cath lab technologists focus specifically on imaging and assisting during invasive cardiac catheterization procedures, requiring expertise in fluoroscopy and contrast media. In contrast, general cardiovascular technologists may perform a broader range of diagnostic tests like echocardiograms or vascular studies.
While both work closely with cardiac patients, cath lab technologists handle fluoroscopic imaging during catheter-based interventions, whereas electrophysiology techs focus more on heart rhythm diagnostics and ablations. Cross-training is common, but each demands distinct technical proficiencies.
Commuters often navigate traffic congestion during peak hours near South Waterfront. Access to public transit and parking availability at OHSU’s multiple sites can influence job satisfaction. Many techs appreciate flexible schedules to mitigate rush-hour challenges in Portland’s urban setting.
