What You'll Be Doing
The Radiation Oncology Nurse is a licensed nurse who provides both direct clinical care and administrative/front desk support within the outpatient radiation oncology department. The incumbent is responsible for conducting patient assessments, documenting in the electronic medical record (MOSAIQ), assisting with treatment coordination, and supporting physicians in the delivery of safe and efficient patient care. In addition, the Nurse Coordinator supports operational workflows, including appointment scheduling, medical record preparation, follow-up on studies, and coordination of survivorship care planning in collaboration with the cancer registry. This position requires strong clinical judgment, organizational skills, and a compassionate approach to patient-centered oncology care.
Clinical Nursing Responsibilities
- Perform and document nursing assessments at each patient visit, including:
- Vital signs, pain assessment, and brief history (reason for visit).
- Entry of findings into the EMR (MOSAIQ).
- Provide a clinical hand-off to the physician, summarizing the patient’s condition and concerns.
- Administer and document patient distress screenings at new patient visits using NCCN Distress Screening guidelines; escalate findings to the physician, social work, or supportive care services as appropriate.
- At the completion of treatment:
- Collaborate with the Cancer Registry department to prepare a treatment summary and survivorship care plan (ASCO Survivorship Letter).
- Review survivorship documentation with patients after physician approval, ensuring patient understanding of follow-up instructions and available resources.
- Provide patient education, counseling, and coordination of follow-up tasks as ordered by the physician.
Administrative & Front Desk Responsibilities
- Greet, check in, and register patients in a professional and courteous manner.
- Schedule, confirm, and reschedule outpatient appointments in collaboration with clinical staff.
- Prepare new patient charts, including requesting, receiving, and organizing outside medical records and imaging.
- Track and follow up on all diagnostic studies, imaging, or labs ordered by physicians to ensure timely receipt and inclusion in the EMR.
- Answer and route incoming phone calls; provide information or assistance to patients, caregivers, and external providers as appropriate.
- Assist in the authorization process by providing clinical information and supporting documentation to the authorization or billing department.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and institutional confidentiality standards at all times.
What We're Looking For
Qualifications
- Education/License:
- Current New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1–2 years of nursing experience required; oncology, radiation oncology, or infusion experience strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in a medical office, outpatient clinic, or similar healthcare setting desirable.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency with EMR systems (MOSAIQ experience highly preferred).
- Knowledge of oncology documentation standards, survivorship planning, and NCCN guidelines for distress screening preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage compassionately with patients and families.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Effective organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking abilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to assist patients with mobility as required.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient for computer work and patient care tasks.
