Frequently asked questions

Advancing to a senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer involves deeper involvement in complex digital control systems upgrades, mentoring junior engineers, and leading design reviews. Expertise in nuclear-specific process controls and mechatronics becomes crucial, reflecting increased responsibility for ensuring system reliability and safety in power generation.

A senior engineer typically has mastery over PLCs, DCS, and control systems integration, especially for nuclear reactors, alongside experience with medium voltage distribution and specialized equipment like turbines and feedwater controls. This contrasts with entry-level roles focused more on foundational instrumentation and basic system troubleshooting.

Daily responsibilities include developing functional specs for control systems, conducting site walkdowns, evaluating instrumentation replacements, and collaborating on nuclear modification packages. The role demands precision and regulatory compliance, with a strong focus on safety-critical system upgrades and digital modernization efforts.

Compensation for this position in Englewood ranges approximately between $82,380 and $125,860 annually. This aligns with regional market rates for senior process control engineers in the nuclear energy sector, factoring in expertise in digital control systems and nuclear plant instrumentation.

Sargent & Lundy fosters advancement through mentorship roles, diverse nuclear project exposure, and continuous skill development in digital control systems. The company’s award-winning benefits and culture promote long-term employee satisfaction, encouraging senior engineers to expand leadership and technical expertise within cutting-edge energy projects.

While a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program is essential, certifications related to nuclear process controls, PLC programming, or control system design enhance candidacy. Local industry trends favor engineers with hands-on experience in nuclear plant systems and compliance knowledge relevant to Colorado’s energy sector.

This role uniquely integrates nuclear power expertise with digital modernization initiatives, backed by a company renowned for innovation and safety in nuclear engineering. Sargent & Lundy’s hybrid work model and comprehensive benefits package further differentiate the position, providing a balanced professional environment in Englewood.

Yes, the position embraces a hybrid schedule requiring in-office presence three days a week, blending remote flexibility with onsite collaboration. This approach supports work-life balance while maintaining close interaction with nuclear project teams and client site engagements.

The Denver area, including Englewood, sees moderate demand for controls engineers with nuclear experience due to ongoing plant upgrades and clean energy initiatives. Employers seek candidates with proven design and digital control expertise, making the market competitive but rewarding for qualified professionals.

Englewood’s proximity to Denver offers various transit options, but traffic congestion during peak hours may impact commute times. The company’s hybrid work policy mitigates daily travel, enabling engineers to balance onsite presence with remote work effectively.
